Fishing Report Archive January 15, 2016 Well there is no doubt that a New Year is upon us here at Lake Amistad. Recently we had a small team tourney with several locals and there were some very nice bags brought to the scales. 3 bags of 5 fish limits over 22lbs! Pretty awesome… my nephew and I had a banner day and won the event with 22.88lbs for our best 5. I feel like the fishing is getting better but is still fairly fragile. You can pull up and catch some nice fish now and again but they aren’t everywhere out there and it is very difficult to catch the 3+lb fish on a consistent basis. The current water level is 1092.19 feet above sea level or 24.81 feet below full pool. Water temps are getting down into the mid-50 range and holding pretty steady as the weather has been stable over the past week or so with air temps typically in the high 60’s during the afternoon and lows in the 40’s at night. The grass in the lake continues to stay pretty healthy and is doing its job to help keep up a good forage population and provide a safe haven for young bass to grow up in. I’m looking for continued better fishing in 2016 and feel great about the future of Lake Amistad… the lake show’s improvement steadily and I suspect we will continue to raise the bar in the coming months. Current Patterns - Shallow: Lipless cranks such as the iMA Rock-N-Vibe are working well in areas with hydrilla in 5 feet or less…. you won’t necessarily load the boat but if you work hard you will locate some decent fish with the chance at some high quality bass as well. The iMa Flit 120 jerkbait bite continues to exist but it seems the bass are holding in specific areas. You must have baitfish present to work this technique and consistently produce. Working a wacky rigged plastic will produce some shallow fish on calm days targeting the pondweed that is still standing Mid-Depth: Crankbaits over hydrilla in 12-20 foot depths is a great technique. Plastic worms with the lightest Ten Bears Tungsten weight where you can still manage to stay connected with the bottom is effective also. Light weight carolina rigs continue to produce as well. Deep: This is where the meat and potatoes is at… 25-45 foot depths on points and drop-offs are your best bet to catch quality fish consistently and maybe find one of those magical schools of fish where you can pop a 20+lb stinger. Big plastic worms, football jigs, carolina rig and drop shot are my favorite techniques. My advice is to do a lot of graphing and locate the bass before standing on the front deck to cast.
