Seems like spring is just around the corner and the fish are showing it too as many are beginning to show signs of being filled with eggs. There was a good event here last week with the FLW Rayovac and fish were caught many different ways all over the lake. Although Amistad is not what it was several years ago… its very apparent she is making a comeback. Lots of fish over 7lbs have been caught over the last several weeks and a good friend of mine boated a 12lb 12oz monster! I look for continued fishing improvement in 2015 and to see a great fishery back to normal in the months ahead. You really can’t go wrong fishing your strengths right now on the lake. Shallow, Mid-Depth and Deep…it seems there is something for everyone. Water temps are up and down with the fronts… I have seen it consistently from 56-64 degrees depending on the stretch of weather we are having. Water levels are steady at 29 feet low full pool or 1088 above sea level. If you are planning a trip to the lake soon it would be prudent to keep an eye on water levels as they will probably be dropping soon for the irrigation season.
Current Patterns -
Shallow: For the best shallow bite run up a river, Rio Grande or Devils. The water temps are warmest there and plenty of fish are hang ‘in out waiting for Mother Nature to get just right to spawn. Flipping any shallow wood with plastics and jigs has been producing as well as jerkbaiting and square bills in the backs of creeks. These fish are mostly males in the 2lb class.
Mid-Depth: Crankbaits over the submerged grass in the 12-18 foot range as well as dragging jigs through this vegetation has been productive for some bigger females. You won’t get as many bites here but this is where the fish are moving to when we have several consecutive warming days.
Deep: Drop shotting is still very productive as well as football jigs and Carolina rigs in the 25-45 foot range. This is still where you want to be to catch that monster. Keep in mind it is best to have deep water access (river channel) of 60-100 foot depths very close by. Good Luck!
