Things are starting to look up here at Lake Amistad. Although late… spring seems to be arriving and the fish are moving up to eat just a bit. Feb. continued to be tough here at the lake. Although I did well in the BASS Central Open here in mid Feb. the fishing was still brutal. Over the past 2 weeks I have seen a change in the fishing as well as the fish themselves. Instead of the fish being so white as they were spending winter way down deep… the bass are starting to show some good color and the fish are looking healthy. The lake level has been steady at 1081+ above sea level but I understand they will begin to pull water for irrigation in the coming weeks. This will probably help the fishing a lot in my opinion. We need to move some water through the system as it has been stagnant since last June. Current water temps are right at 60 degrees and the water color is considered stained for Amistad although visibility is about 3-4 feet down lake and 1-2 feet up the rivers.
Current Patterns -
Shallow: Flipping 6 or 7 inch worms with light weights at any trees or brush in the backs of creeks will produce bass. I haven’t caught many big ones with this technique but it will keep you interested no doubt. The jerkbait bite with an iMA Flit 120 is very productive for me around points and transition areas from bluffs to flats.
Mid-Depth: Swimbaiting with an Optimum 5’ BLT has produced a few fish over the past week and this bite will continue to get better as some bigger fish move to the shallows for spawning. I have also employed a 1/4oz jig head and smaller swimbait to get bites more consistently in this depth zone.
Deep: Drop shotting, football jigs and Carolina rigs are still producing some fish out deep although this bite will be going away… but for now the bigger fish are still being caught in this depth zone.
